Get Another Boyfriend ~ A Marmalade Boy Fanfic
By Meredith Edwards

"You need fifty-two more cents," the woman behind the counter told her.

Meiko reached into her pocket, digging for change. Behind her a line was forming, and she heard people grumbling as she looked for her money. Yuu and Ginta were gone, already heading back inside the theater where Miwa and Miki saved their seats. She wished they hadn't left -- she didn't think she had any more money.

Suddenly someone touched her elbow, and she turned around to find Miwa standing there. "Excuse me," he said politely. Meiko smiled. "Do you need fifty-two cents?"
Meiko nodded. As Miwa counted out the change to the cashier, he said, "I haven't seen you here before. What's your name?"

Meiko looked at Miwa, a puzzled expression on her face. What's he playing? she wondered, but she smiled again and said, "Meiko. Thanks for the change."

"No problem," Miwa replied. He let his gaze run down Meiko's chest, lingering at his breast before meeting her eye again. The way Miwa looked at her made Meiko's throat ache. "You here alone?"

"Yeah," Meiko said. Behind the counter, the cashier took her time filling Meiko's drink, her eyes never leaving them. Meiko glanced at her as she asked, "What about you?"

Miwa leaned closer to her. "All alone," he whispered loudly. He covered Meiko's hand with his. "Maybe you'd like to sit with me?"

Meiko blushed. "I don't even know your name," she said coyly.

"Miwa," came the reply. The cashier set Meiko's drink down in front of them and turned to get her popcorn, but it was obvious from the way she kept glancing back at them that she was hanging on every word they said.

"Well, Miwa," Meiko said, "do you often pick up girls at the movies?" She felt a silly grin begin to pull across her face, and she had to admit that this little charade of Miwa's was making her hungry for more than popcorn. Miwa's hand was warm and heavy on her, and then Miwa reached around and placed his other hand on the small of Meiko's back. Meiko felt a tightening in her thoat and wondered how she'd ever pay attention to the movie with Miwa sitting next to her in the dark.

Winking at her, Miwa replied, "Only cute ones. And I gotta tell you --" He leaned closer and whispered loudly, "I like what I see."

Behind the counter, the cashier dropped Meiko's bag of popcorn, and it was all Meiko could do to not laugh out loud. As she hurried to fill another bag, Miwa trailed his finger up Meiko's back, along her shoulders, and down her arm. Meiko smiled at his touch. "I've already got a boyfriend."

Miwa sighed. "I knew it. Someone like you is too good to be true. Tell him he's a lucky man to have you."

Meiko grinned. "I can still sit with you, if you want."

"Can I hold your hand?" Miwa asked sweetly.

Meiko wanted to kiss him, but she restrained himself. Shrugging, she said, "We'll see. You never know what can happen in the dark."

"I'll be waiting," Miwa said, and Meiko watched as he walked away. Miwa turned once and smiled at him, and then disappeared into the theater.

"What a perv," the cashier said, placing the popcorn in front of Meiko. "He was all over you! Like you'd hook up with someone you just met in a theater." She rolled her eyes. "That happens to me all the time. You're not really going to sit with him, are you?"

Picking up the drink and popcorn, Meiko nodded. "I know him," she said. "That's my boyfriend."

The stunned look on her face made Meiko want to laugh again. "You mean --" she started, but Meiko nodded and slipped out of line. She hurried after Miwa, eager for the lights to go out and the movie to start, though she didn't think she'd see much of it now.
